Seaham Cemetery
Hunter & Central Coast Region, New South Wales, Australia

Grape St
Durham NSW

Contributed by Matt Rocker, Jul 08, 2002 [endorocker@hotmail.com]. Total records = 101.

From Raymond Terrace, take Seaham Road off the highway and remain on it until you reach Wighton Street, Seaham. Turn down into it and travel about 2km down until you reach Grape Street. Turn up into Grape St and to the left will be the entrance to the cemetery.

Seaham Cemetery is a small country cemetery located about 30 minutes drive from Newcastle, Australia.

During a large bushfire in Seaham in 1939, many headstones in the cemetery were destroyed. No records of these people were saved since the caretakers house was razed as well.

The cemetery first accepted burials in 1838, the year Seaham was named. Most of these graves were marked with only simple crosses or marks and since have been lost.

The oldest stone headstone dates back to 1850 and is that of a local family. From 1850 more and more burials were recorded at the cemetery and by 1930 around 70 headstones were in place. Burials stopped around 1950 and there is a limited number of graves from 1960 to 1990. From 1990 to the present around 10 graves have been established. Seaham cemetery is still open for burials.

I recorded this cemetery in April, 2002 from headstones in the cemetery.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
