To reach this cemetery, begin at the intersection of Highway 2 & 53, east of Brantford, (Cainsville), there are traffic lights, travel south on Brant County Road #18 for several kilometres, you will come to an intersectiuon with traffic lights. Turn left on to Brant County Road #4, a.k.a. Cockshutt Road, travel south for a few kilometres. Watch for a road sign indicating Brant County Road #20, a.k.a. Indian Line, turn left and travel east for several kilometres through the Town of Hagersville and continue on. Watch for a road sign indicating County Road #12, a.k.a Fisherville Road, turn right and travel south for a few kilometres until you come to Lakeshore Road, Make a right turn and travel west approximately a half kilometre, you will see the Hoover Cemetery on your left, the south side of Lakeshore Road.

This cemetery is considered as active, although I did not see any evidence of recent burials. As near as I am able to ascertain the cemetery is under the jurisdiction of The Rainham Mennonite Church Cemetery Board. It is nicely maintained.

There are several old slab stones that have been moved and embedded in concrete foundations and placed in two rows in the cemetery. There are two plaques that have been placed in the cemetery, one on a large stone boulder and the other one on a concrete base. Both are important to the origin of the cemetery.

The first plaque reads: "Jacob Hoover 1729 1810. In 1791, Jacob Hoover, a Pennsylvania Mennonite of German Swiss descent, acquired 2,500 acres of land on both sides of Stoney Creek, thereby becoming the first settler in Rainham and Walpole Townships. Jacob, and his wife Barbara Summers, their sons and daughters, Christian, David, Abraham, Benjamin, Henry, Daniel, Mary Miller, Susannah Wolfe, Elizabeth Sternaman and their families settled in 1793. The Hoovers had followed the Loyalists to Upper Canada after the conclusion of the American War of Independence in 1783. They were noted in a local history as "among the most respected and substantial yeomen of Haldimand County." Jacob, the first to be buried in the cemetery with most of his immediate family and many descendants are at rest here. Hoover Heritage Association."

The second plaque reads: "This plaque is erected over the foundations of the first church of the Rainham Mennonite Settlement. This was the second oldest Mennonite meeting house in Canada, constructed circa 1810, and served as the religious and cultural centre of the community for many years. The original meeting house was destroyed by fire and was replaced in 1870 by the present structure, located one mile north of this site. Erected by the Rainham Mennonite Congregation on its 200th anniversary, the North Erie Shore Historical Society, and the I.O.O.F. Lodge, Selkirk. Sep 26, 1993."

I walked this cemetery in May, 2010, reading and recording the inscription from each monument or grave marker that was legible. There are a few older stones that I could not read due to their poor condition.

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
