The island was so remote in the early days from Auckland, each family dealt with their own deceased, there are only about 100 give or take graves on the island in total.

Great Barrier still has about a thousand people living on it and it is common knowledge where graveyards are, or locals who aren't sure can direct visitors to descendants of the old, original families who are only too happy to help out with directions.
