Oakwood Cemetery was established in or about 1818 with Mary "Polly" Pouncey Jones being the first recorded burial. Her original headstone has been lost to time although remnants of it are clearly visible.
This cemetery was created with land donated by Andrew Dexter and General John Scott and these original grounds were called Scott's Free Ground.
In the early 1900's a fire destroyed records which were stored at the Montgomery County Court House. To this day the cemetery lot information for all the grounds to the right of the office are referred to as Lot # Square # and Survey #. Burials to the left are Scott's Free Ground with 1-6 being the original grounds.
There is also what was determined to be a mass burial site, likely victims of typhoid or yellow fever in Survey 4 which was named Children of God.
In the Grand Old Republic Lot, the first row of Union Soldiers contains no bodies. The obelisk in that lot gives their burial locations with 18 unknown soldiers.
Oakwood is home to five other cemeteries which are Land of Peace (the old Jewish Section) Eternal Rest, New Jewish Section recently acquired from Temple Beth Or in a land swap, Oakwood Annex also recently acquired after many years in receivership and Saint Margaret Cemetery which is owned by Saint Peter's Catholic Cemetery with the Sexton of Oakwood handling all burials, records and maintenance. It is important to know the boundaries of each cemetery.
