Cemetery History

Shingle Springs Cemetery is in what was once the boom town of Shingle Springs, California, famous for the Shingle Factory. The town was built up with the hopes that the railroad would continue east through Placerville, which did not happen until 1865.

When the railroad finally went through, population in Shingle Springs skyrocketed. The original cemetery, Planters House Cemetery, could no longer keep with the growth.

The Shingle Springs Cemetery was founded in 1864 (despite the sign onsite saying 1874) to relieve the demand on Planters House Cemetery, and was in continuous use from 1865 to 1970. The earliest recorded burial occurred in 1864, but the earliest burial with a headstone was in 1867. In 1950, the cemetery was deeded to El Dorado County from the Barrett Family.

The Cemetery encompasses approximately 0.57 acres with 94 plots as detected through Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
