Ludlow Cemetery

Ludlow Cemetery is located in the town of Ludlow. Driving east along Interstate 40, exit into Ludlow, and turn right. The cemetery lies on the other side of the railroad tracks.

Ludlow is largely a ghost town, though a number of people live there who work the gas station, motel and cafe along the Interstate. Most of the homes and structures have long been abandoned.

Ludlow was originally a watering stop for the railroad in the late 1800s. Gold ore was discovered later on, and Ludlow prospered until the mining stopped in the 1910's. In 1922, Route 66 was built and led through town, which brought about a renaissance. But when the modern day Interstate 40 was built, Route 66 died. Even though the I40 pretty much runs through Ludlow, few bother to stop.

I visited this cemetery on Mar 17, 2001. It appears to have approximately 50 visible graves, all but three are marked by wooden sticks with no information. Some of the sticks appear to be new, but I believe the graves are still quite old.
