Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church
540 Kelly Ave., Half Moon Bay, CA. 94019
650-726-4674

The cemetery is located in downtown Half Moon Bay. Once downtown, the cemetery can be found by travelling east on Miramontes Street past San Benito Street and over the small bridge. The cemetery entrance gate is just east of the bridge on the right hand side of the street near a grove of eucalyptus trees.

This is the cemetery used by Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church after the closure of the Pilarcitos Cemetery. It is made up of two distinct sections.

The older section is the largest part of the cemetery. It is in moderate to poor condition: toppled gravestones laying face down (so that the names are not visible), missing and broken markers, lots of weeds growing between the graves so that it's hard to get from one to another, mud, gopher holes, broken concrete on the tops of graves, some scattered garbage and broken bottles, and silk flowers that are filthy and years old. At one time, there was a huge beautiful angel statue right in the middle front of the older section. Today, this angel is missing entirely. Another difficulty that this section brings is that it is on a hill with slopes on either side, so some graves are difficult to reach because of the steepness of the hill, and again, the overgrowth of weeds make it even more difficult to navigate the hilly parts. Someone from the Church mows the weeds in the old section once or twice per year.

There is a small area exclusively for baby graves on the right hand side of the old section, about 3/4 of the way up the hill. There is also a potter's field at the very top of the hill in the old section, on the left hand side. Although there are very few grave markers in this section, a 4th generation Half Moon Bay resident informed me that the entire area is full, there are just many unmarked graves here. Most burials in the potter's field date from about 1910 to the 1950s. Our Lady of the Pillar Church may have records of who is buried in the unmarked graves.

On the flat part of the cemetery, which is at the bottom of the hill and to the left (closer to the entrance) is the newer section which is still in active use. This section is grassy and the grass seems to get mowed quite often (weekly?) and the graves seem to be tended regularly. There are often visitors to this section.

This is not a complete listing of all of the burials in this cemetery. The records below were provided by contributors to Interment.net. Last edited Jul 19, 2010. Total records = 243.

    cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
