Eldbrooke Methodist Cemetery
Washington, District of Columbia
Lat: 38°56'55"N, Lon: 77°04'52"W
Contributed by Frieda Klopfenstein, April 16, 2002 [klopfensteinf@msn.com]. Total records = 314.
This cemetery is located adjacent to the Eldbrooke Methodist Church which is located at 4100 River Rd NW, Washington, D.C. Donald R. Barnes is the current custodian of the cemetery records.
The cemetery is roughly rectangular in shape, and is dissected into 4 approximately equal sections by 2 walkways. One runs East-West and the other runs North-South. The entry gate is located at the South end of the North-South walkway.
This cemetery was known at various times as the Tennallytown Cemetery, the Methodist Cemetery and finally, Eldbrooke Methodist Cemetery in honor of Aquila Eld and Philip Brooke.
Eldbrooke Methodist cemetery was established in 1855 and was associated with the Methodist Church until 1938. At that time, a separate cemetery association was established, comprised of owners of the cemetery plots. Although the name was retained, the Church no longer has any affiliation with the cemetery.
The cemetery is somewhat maintained, although apparently infrequently. The grass was not too tall, leaves had been raked to the fences, but many markers had vines growing over them, some markers were broken, some were lying on the ground, and there was considerable litter throughout the cemetery grounds.
Several markers are badly weather worn, and a couple required tracing to recover the information. One of the two wooden markers still existing in the cemetery appears to be in remarkably good condition, although neither contained any legible information. The cemetery also has a number of grave foot markers, along with small concrete lot markers of similar size. I did not record those stones which appeared to be lot markers, but I included a note regarding the foot marker with its associated grave record.
I visited this cemetery in Feb and Mar 2002. I videotaped the markers on 24 Mar 2002.
