In Putnam from Rte 29 driving north turn right or east onto County Hwy 13, less than a half mile. Cemetery is on the north side of the highway.
The Senachwine Pioneer Days Souvenir Book reports that the cemetery was started in 1861 when Peter and Ann Barnhart an acre of land was sold to Senachwine Township to be used for a burial ground.
There are several markers with death dates of 1840 within this Putnam Cemetery. This cemetery is in good condition and still being used.
The Bureau County Genealogical Society completed a survey of this cemetery in 1998. After I physically read this cemetery I compared my work with their transcription and was able to add names which either the marker was broken or missing or I missed seeing them all together. I have identified these entries with an asterisk.
The cemetery was surveyed first on the west section (A-E) from north to south, west to east (towards the entrance). The east section (F, G) was surveyed from north to south, east to west.
I separated the cemetery into sections so I could survey it. Each section is divided by a small road so it was easier to identify A from G, etc. The 1998 survey was completed by Lot #. The lots are not marked and I had a difficult time following where they were. The lots do not run in rows.
I finished surveying this cemetery on Feb 10, 2006. This includes all existing and legible headstones to that date.
