Cemetery History
Camp Butler was the site of a training facility for Union soldiers. It opened in August 1861. There had been a site set aside for a cemetery at the time the camp first opened. By February 1862, after Fort Donelson was surrendered to the Union, approximately 2,000 Confederate soldiers arrived at Camp Butler for imprisonment.
Almost immediately, the POWs began to die at a rapid rate. The heat of the summer combined with the severe winter cold, as well as diseases such as smallpox, typhus and pneumonia, decimated the prisoner population. Roughly 700 POWs died in the smallpox epidemic of summer 1862.
The cemetery at Camp Butler took on remains from both the Union and Confederate sides. Veterans of other wars eventually were interred here, including the Spanish American War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Today, Camp Butler continues to take on new burials.
