Take Highway 55 out of downtown Columbia going towards Cane Valley & Campbellsville. Turn left on Highway 767 to go towards Greensburg, KY. After you pass Mt. Vernon church (on the right) there is a curve in the road and woods to your right - this is the location of the Nelson White Family Cemetery.

After we entered the woods it took us approximately 45 minutes to locate any headstones. The cemetery is in need of maintenance. We were only able to locate 2 headstones and 2 grave markers, due to the overgrowth and fear of snakes we did not venture deeper into the cemetery.

There are only 3 headstones in this African American cemetery: Robert White, his wife Edna and brother John White. The rest are unmarked graves. This cemetery has not been used since 1988.

It is a known fact that this cemetery is located on the back of what used to be Nelson White's farm (Deed Book 81, page 285, 1931). However as of September 2002 we do not know who currently owns the farmland that encompasses our Nelson White family cemetery.

This is not a complete record since many of the people buried here could not afford a headstone. These records were compiled in September 2002. The records were obtained first from a previous transcription in volume 7 of "Adair County Cemeteries" then it was followed up with Nelson White Family descendants, and combined with my own reading, obtained when I visited the cemetery in March of 2002, at which time LaVelda Faull was able to take my family to the Nelson White Family Cemetery Gate.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
