Good Hope Cemetery
Mount Victoria, Charles County, Maryland

Lat: 38° 22' 20"N, Lon: 76° 55' 37"W

In Newburg MD, from Rt. 301 take Rt. 257 Rock Point Road a short distance and turn left onto Mount Victoria Road, follow about 2 miles to site on right corner of Penny Burch Place and Mount Victoria Road. The cemetery is off the road and in the woods, not visible from the road.

Good or Goode Hope Baptist Church dates back to the early 1800s as one of the 1st Baptist churches in Charles County. It is believed the cemetery was established about that time by this same church. I have found no history for this cemetery. I did find one place that suggested the decline of the economy and population in the area at the time caused the church to close it's doors in the 1930s.

Finding the site was very difficult due to a lack of landmarkers and the vegetation overtaking the site. Thanks to my father-in-law's 2nd cousin, near by farmer Buddy Rice, for pointing the site out to us.

This cemetery is far beyond poor condition and appears to be abandoned. If visiting wear boots and long pants. There has not been any maintainance or up keep in what appears to be many years. Many of the the graves have sunken into the ground due to the marshy conditions. Poison ivy, poison oak and other ground coverings have overtaken many of the tombstones. A number of stones have been either broken or trees have fallen on them. The surrounding metal fence has fallen apart, but pieces still remain, some in place some not.

There are at least 2 stones that I could not read due to the inscriptions worn away. There are many small flat ground stones (most children deaths in the S section) that have been over taken by undergrowth. We may have missed a stone or two, of those staggered throughout the woods.

More information might be found available at The Historic Society of Charles County, P.O. Box 2806, La Plata, Maryland 20646.

Julian L. Hayden and I walked and read this cemetery on Jul 21, 2007. This includes all existing and legible stones and markers at that time.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
