Graveyard Island Cemetery #1
Stanly County, North Carolina
Lat: 35° 27' 16"N, 80° 07' 24"W
Contributed by Brandy H. Hartsell, Nov 05, 2003 [branandjohn@hotmail.com]. Total records = 21.
This cemetery which is on on Graveyard Island, can only be reached by walking 3 miles down train tracks or by boat. The train tracks are located at Old Whitney.
These graves were moved to Graveyard Island between 1915 and 1917 when Alcoa decided to dam the Yadkin River. I cannot find another name for the cemetery so am giving it a number.
From what I have researched on Graveyard Island is that there are 3 or more cemeteries on this Island. They were moved out of the way before they flooded the valley that is now Badin Lake.
I walked this cemetery Oct 03, 2003 and recorded all tombrocks. There are 300 or more native rock tombstone that are unreadable.
