This listing was contributed by Sandra Allgeier, May 13, 2011, last edited Sep 19, 2011 [sallgeier@windstream.net].  Total records = 269.

In Murray Nebraska, from 12th Street, drive east on Main Street for one mile. Turn left or north onto Hwy 75 for 1.48 miles and turn east onto Young Road for 1/3 mile, then turn left or north onto Young Cemetery Drive for .29 mi, and you run into the cemetery.

Young Cemetery was established in 1855 as the burial place for a child of William Young. The Oct 08, 1881 minutes of a cemetery board meeting indicate that on that day they formed the Young Cemetery Association for the purpose of administering the formalities of burials and keeping the financial records of cemetery lot sales.

Sandra (Young) Allgeier and Jeanie (Young) Brookhouser have, since 1997, volunteered to oversee Young Cemetery business because they saw the need to preserve a pioneer cemetery. The cemetery is still in use and very well maintained.

The cemetery association recognized the need for shelter on that windy hill for attendees of funerals. The original log cabin had been sitting empty for many years and was deemed ideal for that purpose. In 1941 the cabin was dismantled and moved, log-by-log, from the original Young homestead in Rock Bluff to the cemetery. The work was carried out by the National Youth Association. The NYA was similar to the WPA and CCC in that they were designed to put people to work during the Great Depression. Many Cass County young men worked on the project until its completion just before the entrance of the United States into World War II.

In 2004 the log cabin was placed on the National Register of Historic Buildings because of the connection to the National Youth Association.

The history and database of burial information was compiled from news items, association minutes, sexton records, and tombstone inscriptions of all known burials by Maurice Carmichael and myself, complete up to May 14, 2011.

cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
