Joseph W. Berry, where are you?  This listing of the Berry Family Cemetery is a by-product of my beginning search for my maternal great "grampa" and great "gramma", Rosey, or, Rosa.  Rosey is listed as being from both NH and Ireland on her two known children’s birth certificates.  Their first child William Henry, (my Grandfather) and his sister Ruth A., were both born in Lowell Massachusetts on Sept. 2, 1870, and Dec. 26, 1871, respectively.  Since Rosey may be from NH, it might be that Joseph may have met her there and therefore a descendant of the early Berry settlers in the southern New Hampshire region.  He was employed as an "Operative" and also as a "Spinner" when my grandfather and his sister were born.

Please contact me by if you have any information about Joseph W. Berry, his wife, Rosey (or Rosa), or daughter Ruth A. Berry, or, know of any published Berry family genealogy book.  I have over 400 Berry descendants in my computer file and will share this information with you on request.  Most of the Berry information on file and listed below came from the book, History of Rye.

From the history book, ….. John Berry is said to have been the first settler in Rye or Sandy Beach.  He probably was the son of William Berry, one of those sent out by Mason for his plantation, and who was at Portsmouth as early as 1631 (Savage).   William died before June 1654. His widow, Jane, married Nathaniel Drake.

January, 1648/49, at a town meeting held at Strawberry Bank, "Granted that Wm Berry shall have a lot upon the neck of land upon the South side of the Little River at Sandy Beach."

The Berry Family Cemetery in Rye, NH is located on Breakfast Hill Road approximately 0.3 miles from Route 1.  A stone fence about three foot high surrounds this well kept family burial ground.  The gate is six foot wide and built of tubular steel and fence wire that opens to the road.  The enclosed area is approximately 30 X 40 feet in dimension and sits surrounded by a wooded tract of land.  It’s a perfect setting for the final resting place of a few Berry families who lived in that area.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
