The Hot Springs Cemetery, found within the city limits of present-day
Truth or Consequences, (formerly Hot Springs), N.M., has been city-owned,
operated and maintained from its beginning as early as 1921 and is almost
completely filled. There is no phone or sexton as the cemetery is maintained
by the city.
Technically, this is not the first cemetery. There were two others
and in 1932 and 1935 the persons buried in the early cemeteries were
properly removed to the new cemetery and marked. In 1974 approximately
5 or 6 other graves were found at a near by location and were also removed
to the new cemetery.
There was, at one time, in Section II, a mausoleum called “The Threads
of Life Mausoleum” which contained 15 interments. Due to moisture
damage and massive deterioration of the concrete walls, it was razed
in 1985 and the following persons were re-interred. Pauline Johnson,
Herman Robbins, Jessie Strawsburg, Guy E. Crockett, Pansy Barr Crockett,
A.J. Burleson, Nora I. Burleson, John B. Blackburn, Suda G., Blackburn,
Julius Mitchell, Grace Mitchell, Boyd White, Edna White, May P. Martin
and Rex McRee.
The first recording of the Cemetery was done in 1987 with a follow-up
recording in 1997. Both recordings are included in this posting. All
visible graves have been recorded and this is an actual reading from
mortuary markers or headstones. It is recommended that this list be
used in conjunction with the Hot Springs Cemetery Card File available
in the Sierra Co. Genealogical Society Hot Springs Cemetery book.
