Maiden's Grave cemetery is located on a bluff overlooking the Humboldt River to the north, about 2 miles SE of Beowawe (bay-oh-wow-wee) and an additional 6 miles from the Beowawe exit (# 261) on Interstate 80.

The cemetery was named after Lucinda Duncan who died nearby while travelling west on a wagon train in 1863. Duncan was a 70 year old grandmother, but those who past by her grave in the 1860's, assumed she was a teenage girl. There is a plaque at Duncan's gravesite that includes entries from the diary of James Pressley Yager, dated 16 & 17 Aug 1863, of which a shorten version reads:

"An event occured last night that has cast a gloom over our camp, the death of one of its members. An old lady, the mother and grandmother of a large part of our train . . . Her remains was carried to its last resting place as we proceeded on our journey & up on a high point to our left about one mile from camp . . . A board with the name of the deceased was put up at the head & boulders was laid over the grave to keep wolves from scratching in it."

The cemetery is in poor condition but apparently still in use. There are many gravesites with no markers or with illegible wood headboards.

This record was compiled in May 2004 from all existing and legible headstones.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
