To reach this small community cemetery located at Messenger Bay, in the town of Lenox NY. The cemetery is on the south side of NYS Rt. 31 just east of the intersection of Main Street Road, which connects Rt. 5 in Canastota with Rt. 31 at Messenger Bay.

This cemetery is owned and maintained by the Oneida Lake Cemetery Corporation. There are more than 576 known burials in the cemetery which takes its name from the early Madison County settlement of Oneida Lake that had become a thriving community with a post office by the 1830s.

The cemetery has a "potters field" where an unknown number of people were buried without grave markers. Vandalism sometime before the mid 20th century probably resulted in the destruction of some markers.

Although the cemetery has many 19th century burials it endured a period of neglect during the early 20th century. In 1930 the Oneida Lake Cemetery Corporation was organized. At that time community volunteers leveled the grounds and repaired broken monuments, restoring the cemetery as a suitable memorial for those buried there.

I transcribed and annotated this cemetery from stone inscriptions in 2006. If there are corrections or additions, please feel free to contact me.

    cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

    Clear Digital Media, Inc.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
