Dickersonville Cemetery is on the north side of Ridge Road (State Rt. 104), a half mile west of Dickersonville Road, in the Town of Lewiston, Niagara County, New York.

An early burial ground was situated on the north side of Ridge Road between Ransomville Road and Dickersonville Road on land owned by Achish Pool. Between 1811 and 1851 at least 28 persons were buried here.

In 1851 Isaac Woolson set aside a portion of his land for a new burial ground. According to local tradition the burials from the Pool cemetery were removed to the new ground at about this time, and at least some of the original headstones were used to pave the cellar floor of a nearby farmhouse. The new cemetery contained 30 lots.

In 1854 Isaac Woolson sold the burial ground to the newly formed Dickersonville Cemetery Association. In 1872 the Association purchased adjacent land from Gideon Shippy to expand the cemetery to its present size of 2.5 acres. The added ground contained 103 lots.

The Dickersonville Cemetery Association was most active in the late 1800's. In the early 1900's, as members died or moved away, local interest waned and few burials took place. In 1946 John Adams, the sole surviving Trustee, disbanded the Association.

Dickersonville Cemetery was abandoned for the next 35 years. Brush and trees grew over the graves, time and vandals took their toll, and many markers were misplaced, lost or destroyed.

In the late 1970's, thanks largely to the efforts of local resident J. Murray and the Lewiston Historical Preservation Commission, the cemetery was revitalized. In 1983 it was reactivated under the ownership of the Town of Lewiston. Today it is a neglected, though still active, rural cemetery.

R. S. Woolson conducted the following reading in September 2002. A 1936 DAR reading, lot occupant and owner lists from 1872 and 1877, and a plat of the grounds were used to establish positive identification of many destroyed or illegible markers. Further comparison was made with readings done in the 1970's by T. Peirce, M. Standen, and J. Murray, and cemetery records kept by the Town of Lewiston.

This is a complete transcription of all known and/or visible burials which I compiled in Sep of 2002, using the above materials. Updated Oct 2006.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
