History

Greenwood Union Cemetery dates back to 1837 when it was known as Union Cemetery of Rye, operated by Christ Church of Rye. In 1855 the Methodist Episcopal Church took over operation, and changed the name to Greenwood Union Cemetery. In 1902, management was transferred to a Rural Cemetery Corporation organized by Stuart W. Cowan, an attorney from Mount Vernon, NY. From 1902 until 1984, cemetery operations were supervised by three successive generations of the Cowan family. From 1984 to present, a Board of Directors presides over management.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
