Oakland Cemetery

This older cemetery is located 1/4 mile west of the currently used cemetery in Oakland, Marshall, OK. From the intersection of Hiways 70 and 199 in Madill, go west 1 mile on US 70, the cemetery is on the S. side of the Hiway.

The grounds are well kept but most of the monuments are in terrible conditions. Many are missing with only a base remaining, others have pieces missing and others have toppled onto the ground while others are broken into several pieces.

This is an unusual cemetery. It is nearly all children. Many of them died in the winter of 1899. Cholera and Smallpox were rampant in Indian Territory and I wonder if that is what got all these children. I have no information other than this on the cemetery,
