The Murray County courthouse was built shortly after statehood in Sulphur. The area chosen had a small cemetery located on it. There is no record if the cemetery ever had a name. After the site was chosen, the cemetery was moved to the current location 3 miles north of Sulphur, on 14th Street. This registry was taken by the Arbuckle Historical Society in 1983. It has been reorganized here in alphabetical order for clarity and speed in finding names quickly. You may consult the Society for the original registry. This registry was taken in section and rows where additional genealogical information can be gathered by the location and order of interments. This is useful in the search for family members buried close by with different surnames. Arbuckle Historical Society, 400 W. Muskogee, Sulphur, OK 73086 Section 15-North, in the northeast corner of Oaklawn Cemetery, was a separate portion of the Sulphur Cemetery. It was reserved for African American burials. It is now included as part of the main cemetery. All know burials up to the date of registry are included and there is no notation of race of the interred. There is a large Veterans Hospital in Sulphur that was established after WWI to treat TB of the veterans who were exposed to poison gas. That is the reason for the large number of military graves. The old section filled up and they started a new one.
