Gibson Cemetery
Eagle Creek, Clackamas County, Oregon

Contributed by Dee Warren, Jan 16, 2002 [dwarren@bctonline.com]. Total records = 34.

Presented here with permission from Lucille Geigle, who compiled this information from tombstone inscriptions.

Located across from SE Wildcat Mountain Drive and SE Grain Road. James Gibson was buried in the cemetery located on land which he had donated many years ago to be used as a public cemetery.

Between 1964 and 1994 the location of many graves was "lost" due to vandalism, restoration (bulldozing), or other unknown reasons. All of the metal grave markers of the Woodle family members were removed during a "cleanup" in the 1970s. After June 1980 several flat stones disappeared - photographs taken of those markers proved useless due to reflections from glass plates covering name inscriptions (no written copy of those names was made then). Only one photograph of a "flat stone" was kept. In 1980 the debris pile at the northwest corner of the cemetery contained some broken pieces of inscribed" concrete. There is positive knowledge of 32 burials in the cemetery - there may have been as many a forty burials.

Three Woodle's (children of Joseph and Lydia Ann Howlett Woodle) graves and one Chapman grave were mentioned as being in the Gibson Cemetery in a genealogy book, "East Goes West" by Alta Craft. Mabel Valentine Woodle, b 26 Aug 1884 and died 10 Jun 1900; Howard Woodle b July 1905 and died 13 Aug 1905; and Linnie Viola Chapman Gibson b. 3 Aug 1877 d 10 Aug 1966 (married 23 Dec 1900, Richard Gibson #4 above). The whereabouts of the markers (and so the location) of the aforestated graves is presently unknown.

Gary Woodle maintains that there were more than three Woodle graves in the cemetery in 1964, possibly six.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
