Chess Cemetery
Richhill Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania

Lat: 39° 52' 58"N, Lon: 80° 25' 50"W

Contributed by Brad Jarvis, Apr 18, 2008, last edited Apr 08, 2009 [forza@windstream.net]. Total records = 47.

From Waynesburg follow Route 21 West approximately 6.5 miles through the town of Rogersville and to a blinking yellow light. Bear to the right and stay on Route 21 West for another 13.5 miles, passing through the town of Wind Ridge. Make a left onto SR 3022. This road also serves as the western entrance of Ryerson Station State Park. Remain on SR 3022 another 2.4 miles. The path to the cemetery will be on your left and begins at the park's eastern entrance sign. You must park at the eastern entrance and walk the rest of the way to the cemetery. The walk is about 3/4 of a mile on cleared paths and signs will point the way when the path intersects with other trails. The cemetery is surrounded by a wooden rail fence.

Despite its remote location, the cemetery is in fair condition. It is surrounded by large trees which mostly prohibits undergrown has given the stones some protection to the elements over the years. Only a few stones are worn badly, and only a few have fallen. I found ten unidentified fieldstone markers. No burials have occurred here in 108 years.

I walked the cemetery on 12 Jan 2008. This transcription is complete and includes all existing stones. I also have digital photographs of all the stones as well as many views of the cemetery itself and would share them with anyone interested.

Notes:
* An earlier transcription of this cemetery completed in August of 1978 by James & Dorothy Hennen also lists Elizabeth Poland as being buried here. I could not find or identify this stone in 2008. It could have at one time been on one side of William Poland's stone which is badly worn today and barely legible.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
