The cemetery can be reached by traveling a mile and a half south along 469th Avenue from South Dakota's Highway 46. The cemetery is at the east end of a dirt road called Glenwood Street.

St. Peter's Cemetery was started on October 1, 1890, when friends gathered to established the Danish cemetery. The original land for the cemetery was donated by Asmus Ebsen. An additional acre of land on the cemetery's south side was later donated by Jim Johnson. The first burial was reported to have been that of a nine year old girl named Marie Ebsen, who died from diptheria.

On July 18, 1908, an organizational meeting was held with Martin Ebsen as chairman. During this meeting, five Trustees were elected; and, articles of incorporation were adopted. In 1909, four dollars were spent on a caretaker. In 1913, lots sold for ten dollars each. In 1961, additional ground for the cemetery was purchased from Reynold and Loreen Ebsen, and Harry and Louise Johnson.

In 1963, perpetual care was started. The cost of one to four graves was $50.00; and, the cost of five to eight graves was $100.00. In 1965, a resolution was adopted, which said that only interest from the perpetual fund could be spent. In 1966, a resolution was passed; and, it said that burial vaults had to be made of concrete, not wood. The cost of the graves included perpetual care.

Since 1890, the following improvements were made to the cemetery. Out of the original $43.00 that was raised for the cemetery, $42.05 was spent for fencing, barbed wire, nails, posts, etc. In 1897, members were assessed a dollar each for repairs. Later, a new fence and arch were added. Members were asked to donate four dollars each for this project; and, $94.00 were raised. This was combined with money the cemetery already had for a total of $142.81, out of which $138.80 was spent on the project. In 1970, a new row of evergreens were planted on the east side of the cemetery. And, a flag pole was donated by Albert Johnson in 1976.

The survey of St. Peter's Cemetery was conducted by Brian M. Hass on November 5, 2001. During this survey, information of genealogical interest was transcribed from all visible grave marker inscriptions. A printout of this transcribed data was compared against burial records; and, differences between the transcriptions and burial records were noted and circled on the printout. Information on potentially unmarked graves was also noted. The cemetery was revisited by Brian Hass on December 9, 2001 for the purpose of determining whether or not the discrepencies were the result of errors in the transcriptions; and, any necessary corrections to the 2001 data were made at that time. Information from two newly reinstalled grave markers was also transcribed during the revisit.

Information was gathered from the following sources:
1) 2001 St. Peter Cemetery Survey Notes by Brian Hass. This is a collection of hand-printed survey data and notes collected during visits to St. Peter Cemetery in 2001. Special care was taken to insure that the transcriptions were accurate.
2) St. Peter's Cemetery burial records. These records includes names and dates of birth and death for individuals buried at the cemetery. They also list lot and grave numbers.
3) "St. Peter's Cemetery." No author was listed; but, the article was most likely written by members of the Beresford G. F. W. C. Study Clubs in 1989 for the South Dakota state centennial. The article contains historical information about the cemetery.
4) "St. Peter Cemetery," page 81 of the Beresford Centennial book, Beresford_100_Years, published 1983 by the "Beresford Republic" and the "Lennox Independent." This article contains some historical information on the cemetery.
5) South_Dakota_Atlas_and_Gazetteer, page 70, published 1997 by DeLorme.

The following listing includes transcriptions of genealogical data from all visible grave markers. Information on unmarked graves was obtained from the second source listed above. The third source notes that the cemetery contains a number of unknown grave sites.

cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
