From Spearfish SD take Spearfish Canyon Highway (US Hwy 14 Alt)
south for about 10 miles, turn left or east onto a dirt road at
Squaw Creek which is the old Carbonate Road, just north of Maurice
and continue for about 1.5 miles to the historic mining town of
Carbonate.
This is located in the Black Hills National Forest between Maurice
and Maitland, which is on a hill between Deadwood & Spearfish,
SD. Travel to the cemetery can only be done with off road vehicles
now and one needs permission to enter the area.
This is the burial site used by the Carbonate mining camp when
it was active in the late 1800s. The headstones are all but gone
from age, or the graves have been vandalized by grave robbers
since that time. A group of us are working very hard to get this
cemetery preserved. May they rest in peace.
An excerpt from a book written by Mildred Fielder, that can be
found in the South Dakota Historical Collections, can be read
here.
I visited this cemetery in the summer of 2006.
