Nazareth Cemetery is located on the west side of Lincoln County's 472 Avenue ("Old 77"), about four and a half miles north of Beresford, South Dakota. The cemetery is half a mile north of Lincoln County's 293 Street. The cemetery occupies the southeast corner of the northeast quarter of section eight.

J. C. Larson donated half an acre from his eighty acre homestead as a gift to form the cemetery. The first burial was that of Caroline Hanson, the wife of Peter Hanson, in 1880. She was believed to have been in a wagon train and to have been buried at the site as they passed on through.

The Cemetery Association was organized on March 3, 1909. At the first meeting, it was decided that a forty-inch high wire fence with barbed wire on top would be placed around the cemetery. Each member of the Association originally paid five dollars per year. However, this was raised to one hundred dollars per year for perpetual care; so, interest could pay for the cemetery's upkeep.

In 1966, Martin and Dale Pedersen made and installed the Nazareth Cemetery sign. Originally, the sign was located over the gateway. However, the sign had to be moved between the two gates in 1983 to allow the grave digger easier access to the cemetery.

In 1970, additional land for the cemetery was purchased from the Klostergaards. Lots in the new addition varied in price and size, and included perpetual care. The north and west driveway was rearranged to allow for additional burial space, if needed.

The cemetery is surrounded by plowed fields on its south, west, and north sides. The eastern side of the cemetery faces the road and is marked by an attractive fence. Evergreen trees line the cemetery's western border; and, a new row of evergreens marks the northern border. A storage shed stands at the cemetery's southwest corner. There is a single entrance on the cemetery's east side; and, a single driveway down the cemetery's center. Nazareth Cemetery is well maintained. The cemetery appears to be about two-thirds filled, with unused areas at its western and northern sides.

The cemetery was surveyed by Brian M. Hass on October 18 and October 28 of 2001. The transcriptions obtained during these visits was compared against burial records; and, any discrepencies were noted and circled on a printout of the transcriptions. The cemetery was revisited for data verification on December 6, 2001. Rubbings of worn inscriptions on three markers were obtained on December 11, 2001.

The following sources were used as references for some historical information listed above.
1) 2001 Nazareth Cemetery Survey Notes by Brian Hass. This is a collection of hand-printed survey data and notes collected during visits to Nazareth Cemetery in 2001. The data includes names; dates and places of birth, marriage, and death; and, other data obtained from grave marker inscriptions. Special care was taken to insure that all names were transcribed accurately from the markers. This document includes corrections.
2) Nazareth burial records, compiled by the G. F. W. C. study clubs, 1989. This document lists names and some death dates of individuals buried at Nazareth Cemetery.
3) "Nazareth Cemetery," pg 79, Beresford_100_Years, published in 1983 by the "Beresford Republic" and the "Lennox Independent."
4) "The History of Nazareth Cemetery," 1989. This article on the Beresford Cemetery was written by the G. F. W. C. study clubs for the South Dakota state centennial. This article included burial records which listed names and years of death.
5) South_Dakota_Atlas_and_Gazetteer (first edition), page 71, published 1997 by DeLorme.

The following listing includes transcriptions of genealogical data from all visible grave markers. Information on possible unmarked graves was obtained from the second source.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
