Gothland Cemetery can be reached by traveling four miles east from Beresford along South Dakota's Highway 46 and then traveling a quarter of a mile south along Union County's 476 Avenue. The cemetery is on the west side of the road, opposite from the farm place located at 29748 476 Avenue.

Gothland Cemetery is located west of where the church once stood. It is approximately one acre in size, measuring 53.7 yards in width and 121 yards in length. The land was donated by Duane Deane and Eddison Stark in 1891. The cemetery was organized that same year. Annual business meetings were held and arrangements were made for property maintenance.

During the summer of 1891, the Congregational Church of Gothland was built on this land. The cost of construction was four hundred sixty eight dollars and thirty cents. The first church service was held on November 29, 1891; and, Rev. William S. Washburn was the first minister to preach at the church. The dedication was held in June of 1892.

As more people got cars and wanted to attend church service on Sunday mornings, the Gothland church organization was dissolved. People then became members of other churches in the towns. In October of 1931, the Gothland church was sold for three hundred dollars and moved away; and, the money was given to the cemetery association.

The large cottonwood tree at the center of the church yard was left in place and was later regarded as a landmark. It was believed to have been planted in 1891. The tree's base had grown to a diameter of twenty-three feet wide by 1989. It was still standing during the 2002 visit.

Gothland Cemetery has a perpetual care plan. The cemetery is under the guidance of the Gothland Cemetery Association, which is based in Beresford, SD. The association is responsible for selling burial plots and for accepting donations for the cemetery.

The survey of Gothland Cemetery was conducted by Brian M. Hass on November 4, 2001. During this survey, information of genealogical interest was transcribed from all visible grave marker inscriptions. A printout of this transcribed data was compared against burial and WPA records; and, differences between the transcriptions and the records were noted and circled on the printout. Information on potentially unmarked graves was also noted. The cemetery was revisited by Brian Hass on December 16, 2001 for the purpose of determining whether or not the discrepencies were the result of errors in the transcriptions; and, any necessary corrections to the 2001 data were made at that time. Rubbings of worn inscriptions on three worn grave markers were also obtained during the revisit. The cemetery was revisited again on January 7 and July 10 of 2002 for the purpose of gathering additional information.

Information was gathered from the following sources:

1) 2001 Gothland Cemetery Survey Notes by Brian Hass. This is a collection of hand-printed survey data and notes collected during visits to Gothland Cemetery in 2001. The data includes names; dates and places of birth, marriage, and death; and, other data obtained from grave marker inscriptions. Special care was taken to insure that all names were transcribed accurately from the markers. This document includes corrections.

2) Gothland Cemetery listing of graves, WPA Graves Registration Project, Oct 1940. The listing contains names, grave locations, dates of death, ages at death, genders, veteran status, and comments.

3) Gothland burial records. This document lists names, burial dates, and block and lot numbers. When the record keepers changed over the years, death dates were listed instead of burial dates in the same column.

4) "Gothland Cemetery," page 79 of the Beresford Centennial book, Beresford_100_Years, published 1983 by the "Beresford Republic" and the "Lennox Independent." This contains some historical information on the cemetery.

5) "Gothland Church," page 71 of the Beresford Centennial book, Beresford_100_Years, published 1983 by the "Beresford Republic" and the "Lennox Independent." This contains some historical information on the church and cemetery.

6) Gothland Cemetery history, 1989. This history of the cemetery was written for the South Dakota state centennial.

7) "History of the Gothland Church 1891-1913"

8) South_Dakota_Atlas_and_Gazetteer (first edition), page 71, published 1997 by DeLorme. 9) Centennial_Atlas-_An_Atlas_of_Distinction, published by Centennial Atlas in Watertown, South Dakota.

The following three people were among those originally buried at Gothland Cemetery. Eleanor and John Charles Smoots were buried there in 1925 and 1930 respectively; and, Fay Hiscox DeRemer was buried there in 1930. According to the notes in the burial records, the bodies of these three individuals were removed from the cemetery. The body of Eleanor Smoots was moved to Rapid City, SD; and, the body of Fay DeRemer was moved to Alcester, SD.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
