Sorrell Cemetery
Hampton, Carter County, Tennessee

615 Fourth Ave, Hampton TN

Lat: 36° 16' 48"N, Lon: 82° 10' 10"W

Contributed by Thomas M. Ellington, Jun 27, 2005 [tellingt@adelphia.net]. Total records = 12.

In Hampton, turn south onto First Ave (first cross street) crossing over Crooke St & Church St. Turn east onto Main St and proceed up the hill crossing Second & Third Avenues. Turn south on to Fourth Ave crossing over Hampton View Drive and the cemetery will be on the right hand side of the street across from 615 Fourth Ave.

This cemetery is on land which was originally owned by Loy C. Carden and it is in excellent condition. All stones are in good shape with only signs of weathering present. Stones are made of either granite or marble except one which appears to have been made of limestone.

The cemetery is located on a hill to the right of Donnie Carden's home, who maintains the cemetery. There is a narrow gravel road from the highway that allows access to the cemetery.

Grounds appeared to have been recently mowed and are well maintained. Southern edge is formed by a tree line, eastern edge is formed by Fourth Avenue with the northern and western edges formed by a neighboring field. The cemetery slopes away from Fourth Avenue toward the west. The dimensions of the cemetery are about 85 feet wide by 45 feet deep with many of the graves running in a line along the western edge of the plot and all the graves at least half way into the cemetery.

There are a total of 19 stones in the cemetery. Of these, 12 are head stones, 5 appear to be foot markers and 2 appear to be section markers on the southern end of the plot as they have an H or I in the top and all the headstones in that area of the plot are Hopkins.

This file contains all visible burials in the cemetery, which I read on Jun 23, 2005, from tombstone inscriptions.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
