San Marcos-Blanco Cemetery
Hays County, Texas

Lat: 29°54'59"N, Lon: 97°54'32"W

The San Marcos-Blanco cemetery is situated northeast of San Marcos, approximately halfway between the two communities which it serves, on what was then called the Old Austin Highway or Stage Coach Road (now called Post Road).

The deed for 10.62 acres of land was purchased from W. O. and Leonora S. Hutchison on 16 Jun 1893. it was registered in the Hays County Courthouse as San Marcos-Blanco Cemetery. Five African American Men, all landowners, acting jointly as Trustees for the newly formed San Marcos-Blanco Cemetery Association, paid $200.00 cash, to be used for a cemetery for African Americans in the San Marcos area. These five men were charged by their peers with developing, creating, and managing a cemetery which would serve the needs of their community. The deed read, in part, that "The San Marcos and Blanco Cemetery Association will be managed and controlled by said trustees and their successors under such rules and regulations as said association may prescribe." The signing trustees were Wyatt Newman, James Landon, Henry Richardson, Luckey McQueen, and Miles Bowes.

In addition to two of the original cemetery trustees (Newman and Langdon), other notable African Americans buried in the San Marcos-Blanco cemetery include: George Mose Hollins, 7 Sep 1890. Hollins went to work as a truck driver for Southern Grocery Company in 1918. The store produced "Old Mose Coffee" and put his picture on the bags and cans. He died on 12 Dec 1952, age 62. Buried next to him is Etta Lee Fuller-Hollins, his wife, 7 Mar 1897-1 Feb 1983 age 86. They were business owners in San Marcos.

Emma Hamilton, born 1837, died 15 Aug 1886 age 49. (Note the burial date. It makes this writer wonder if this property was used as a gravesite before it was officially purchased). Lewis Tucker, born 19 Jun 1865, died 26 Jan 1891, age 26. (Again, note the burial date). Families had always paid for lots and burial sites, this burial rule died with the cemetery association.

The name of the San Marcos-Blanco Cemetery has evolved and changed throughout the years as public perception has changed. Because it was the burial site for the African American population, over time it came to be called the San Marcos Colored Cemetery. It was sometimes referred to as the Pauper's Plot.

Later efforts were made by a new cemetery association to restore and take care of the beautiful historical burial site. As money was raised, they were able to have a cyclone fence installed and the grounds tended. After the fence was paid for, again funds stopped coming in. The cemetery fell in to disrepair and people disrespectfully began using the burial site as a dumping ground, a junkyard.

Like many other African-American cemeteries in Hays County, Texas, San Marcos Blanco Cemetery became filled with tangled weeds obscuring the inscriptions on the old tombstones. Many of those buried here are in unmarked graves, with no more than a pile of rocks or a stone marking the site. The records of local undertakers are of very little help in determining some of the names, because in the early days of the cemetery, African Americans were often identified in mortuary records by nothing more than their race, sex, and cost of their funeral.

There are laws governing our historic Texas cemeteries. The Civil Statutes of the State of Texas, volume 7A, Article 2351f, Section 1, shows that Commissioners Courts of the counties of this State are hereby authorized to spend moneys in the general fund for the purpose of maintenance and upkeep of public cemeteries in their respective counties. This writer went before the County Judge and the Commissioners and gave each one a copy of the Civil Statutes, reminding them of their obligation to keep that historic cemetery cleaned and looking good at all times. Today the upkeep of that beautiful site is great.

During the 109 years of the cemetery's existence, it has served the San Marcos and Blanco communities well. On 19 Jun 1997, the cemetery was honored with an Official Texas Historical Maker. The founders signed the deed on 16 Jun 1893; what a Juneteenth our ancestors celebrated then, buying their own property and paying cash for it. And now, 104 years later, we had another big celebration on the same grounds. An Official Texas Historical Marker for the San Marcos-Blanco Cemetery on Post Road.

I walked and read this cemetery in 1990. I will accept additions and corrections if someone has information I do not have.

    cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

    Clear Digital Media, Inc.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
