Sacred Heart Memorial Gardens
Darvills, Dinwiddie County, Virginia

Lat: 37° 02' 46"N, Lon: 77° 50' 42"W

The cemetery is located just off Route 613, approx. 2 miles south of Rt. 40 in Darvills, Virginia. It is located within a forest and is difficult to see from the road to due the overgrowth of trees, though it is right next to the road. No official sign was visible in 2009.

This cemetery was established in 1942 as a result of the construction of Camp Pickett, a military training ground. The government bought private land on which to construct the military reservation, including the land on which Poplar Lawn Baptist Church and various family cemeteries were located. The remains from these cemeteries were reinterred at either the African American cemetery (which may also include some Native American graves) or Butterwood (Blackstone, VA, Nottoway County) cemetery, to which the remains of Euroamericans were moved. A total of approximately 2000 remains were reinterred in Sacred Heart Memorial Gardens, however only a fraction of headstones are present or visible.

This is not a complete listing of all of the burials in this cemetery. The records below were provided by contributors to Interment.net. last edited Jul 22, 2011. Total records = 17.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
