Fort Walla Walla Cemetery

Fort Walla Walla in Walla Walla County was established in 1856. First established in 1818 by Donald McKenzie of the Northwest Company as Fort Nez Perce it later became known as Fort Walla Walla for the River and the Indian tribe in the vicinity.

It is located West of Walla Walla next to the Fort Walla Walla Park and Museum Complex on Myra Road, Sec.31 Twp.7N. R.36E. From Highway 12 exit to 2nd St. Turn right onto Main St. ,left at 9th St., right on Dalles Military Road and right on Myra Road proceeding about 1/4 mile to the entrance.

The soldiers here were involved in some of the most desperate Indian conflicts on the Western frontier including the Battle of Frenchtown, The Battle at Steptoe Butte, Colonel George Wright's Expedition, and the Battle of Whitebird Canyon part of the Nez Perce Indian War with Chief Joseph's Band. Veteran's of these expeditions are buried here along with other personel of the Fort which was decommissioned as an Army base in 1910. Originally recorded by Violet Ries Wells. A large square monument is inscribed: "In Memory of Enlisted Men, 1st U.S. Cavalry. Killed in Action at Cottonwood Can(y)on Idaho, July 3rd 1877."

Memorial Marker

Next to this monument is a tall shaft with the inscription: "To the Memory of 33 Enlisted Men of Cos. H and F-1st U.S.Cavalry Killed in Battle with Hostile Indians at White Bird Creek Idaho June 17,1877. Erected by Surviving Comrades."

Another stone, simply says: SIX UNKNOWN, and there are five others marked UNKNOWN.
There are two Indian graves-an Indian prisoner and a Nez Perce Indian.
Directly behind the marker for Jos. MAEHLER is a square stone with the name MACHLER and the words: Oh how sad to see you die. And now I'll see those bright brown eyes and dear, dear face no more. MILES AND VINSON
