Dellona Center Cemetery
Dellona, Sauk County, Wisconsin

Lat: 43° 34' 36"N, Lon: 89° 53' 19"W

Contributed by Kathy Waddell, May 23, 2003 [kaffe03@yahoo.com]. Total records = 104.

Located: At the intersection of Simpson and South Avenue. Take County P to Simpson Road. Go south to South Avenue then left. Cemetery is on the left a little ways up where Simpson Road heads south again. Another way is to take Hwy 33 and turn north on Coon Bluff Road. Cross Hwy 23 and continue north a few miles. Turn left on South Avenue. Cemetery is a mile or so and will be on the right.

Stones are in bad condition due to their age. Cemetery is well kept and although burials were no longer permitted, I did find two recent stones. One without a date and one with a death date of 2000.

Dellona Center is also known by several other names: Central Dellona Cemetery, Red School House Cemetery, Beaver Schoolhouse Cemetery, Dellona Methodist Cemetery, and Dellona Protestant Cemetery.

At the entrance, an historic marker reads:

Revolutionary War Veteran

"Private John Greenslit is the only known Revolutionary War soldier buried in Sauk County. He enlisted in the Connecticut State Troop Sep 01, 1782 at the age of 15, serving one year under Captain Benjamin Durkee, stationed at Fors Trumbull and Griswold, Greenslit saw action on Long Island. He was born Jun 5, 1767 at Hampton, CT. John and Salome Pitts Greenslit came to Dellona in 1855/56 to join two of their eight children, Henry and Stephan. John Greenslit died April 1, 1856. Salome died in April, 1860, aged 94. They are buried at Dellona Center Cemetery."

John who died at age 89, owned a lot in this cemetery. However, there were markers for John and Salome in the Fairfield Cemetery. Salome died at the home of a son in Fairfield Township. As a result, it is uncertain whether John's body was removed from the Dellona Cemetery to Fairfield or whether the marker in Fairfield is a "memorial" marker. The stones at Fairfield have since deteriorated and are a pile of stones but it is believed that at least Salome is buried there."

Reference used to verify markers not there or unreadable was taken from information obtained by members of the Wisconsin State Old Cemetery Society when the cemetery was copied in December, 1974.

I walked, copied and verified this cemetery on May 18, 2003. This cemetery was copied from east to west.

    cemetery records

A free online library of cemetery records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, for historical and genealogy research.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
