Dunwich Cemetery is located on the outskirts of the township of Dunwich, North Stradbroke Island and is the largest of three cemeteries on the island which are all within close proximity to the town. This site is the general cemetery while one of the other two cemeteries is an aboriginal burial site and the third is an old leper cemetery.
Dunwich Cemetery dates back to 1850 and is stepped in history including being the second oldest European type cemetery in Queensland. The exact number of graves is not known, but records say that there is between 800 to 900 plots with many of the 'graves unmarked'. There is also an information board at the entrance to the cemetery erected by the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum which reads inter alia, "Final resting place of 8426 Dunwich Benevolent Asylum inmates."
A vehicle track through the centre of the cemetery allows visitors to get close to most plots before walking is required. The grounds are easy to walk around and good shade is provided by a few large trees but no toilets, tables or taps were found. There are several modes of transport to the island including vehicle barges, ferries and water taxis. The trip on the vehicle barge takes around one hour from the Cleveland Ferry Terminal, which is about a forty minute drive south of Brisbane's CBD.
Dunwich Cemetery is administered by the Redland Shire Council and more information can be found on the web or by contacting the Council.
This is not a complete listing of burials! The records below were provided by contributors to Interment.net.
