Goat River Cemetery (River Bend Cemetery)
Central Kootenay, British Columbia, Canada
Contributed by Harv Schmidt, Jul 19, 2003 [harv_schmidt@hotmail.com]. Total records = 6.
Goat River Cemetery, also locally known as River Bend Cemetery, is located about 7 miles East of Creston on Highway # 3. It is on the right hand side of the road heading East, just past the bridge. The cemetery was started around 1898 during the great epidemic
Goat River Cemetery was designated as an Historical cemetery by order in council in 1975. It falls within the boundaries of the Regional District of Central Kootenay.
There are only two graves with tombstones although many are buried here. In 1969/70 the highway was re-aligned and 50 of the original graves were exhumed and moved across the road to the present location. Most of the early burials that are unmarked, and were Canadian Pacific Railroad workers or transients. I have been told by one of the local museum directors that most of the graves were unmarked and many were Orientals who died while pushing the railway through in 1897-99.
I walked and read this cemetery on Jul 03, 2003 and combined it with additional burial records from the local museum archives. Comments, corrections, or info on others who are or may be buried here are always welcome.
