To reach this area use the Saint Barbe (Newfoundland)-Blanc Sablon (Quebec) ferry. You must drive about 40km east of the landing to get to Capstan Island.

Capstan Island is a small village of about 50 people on the Labrador coast. To reach the cemetery you must follow Fishermen's Crescent road about 500 feet. The cemetery is on the right side of the road behind the playground.

The name of the village comes from a little island close to the shore where seal hunters used to use a special tool called "capstan" to keep seals in fishing nets in the nineteenth century. Nowadays people of Capstan Island still make a living from seal hunting and cod fishing.

This cemetery is owned and maintained by Saint John the Evangelist Anglican Church. Judging from the existing markers, the oldest burial in this cemetery is 1875, the last 1992. The cemetery is fenced, but not well maintained.

I visited and read this cemetery in July of 2001. It includes all existing and legible stones and markers. There appear to be some unmarked.
