Congregational Chapel Cemetery
Inverness, Megantic County, Quebec

This early burial place is situated on the Concession Road, near Inverness, Quebec. Travel south on the Gosford Road from the Village of Inverness, and you will find the cemetery just beyond where the Hamilton Road joins the Gosford Road.

The Congregational Chapel was erected in 1840, with its adjoining cemetery. Although the chapel lasted only until 1949, the cemetery still remains.

There is a lot of history buried here. It is the resting place for the Chapel's first two ministers, Rev. Donald Hendry, and Evangelist, William Anderson. It is also the resting place for many of the pioneers of Inverness who came over from the Island of Arran, Scotland.

Between the years of 1829 and 1844, these people were buried in what is known as the First Burying Place about a mile from where the Congregational Chapel existed, but due to the growing forest, and deterioration of their wooden markers, many of them were re-interred in the Congregational Chapel Cemetery in the early 1900's.

This cemetery is one of many "orphaned" cemeteries that the Megantic County Historical Society has adopted and maintains, and is in very good condition. No burials since 1949 leads me to believe that it is not an active cemetery.

In front of this cemetery, I found a small burial place containing 5 headstones, all bearing the family name of McKillop. I am not certain whether this is a private cemetery, or a part of the Congregational Chapel Cemetery, but I have listed it as being part of the Congregational Chapel Cemetery, and have identified those burials with an asterisk (*).
