British Military Graveyard
Ballincollig, County Cork, Ireland

Submitted by Anne Donaldson Mar 07, 2011, last edited Apr 07, 2011 [adonaldson@iol.ie]. Total records = 345.

Ballincollig town is north of the bypass road from Cork to Killarney, 6 miles (10km) west of Cork City on the River Lee. From Main Road, through Eastgate (beside ALDI) first right into small housing estate 'Mill Range', diagonally across behind high walls. (Yew trees visible).

This cemetery was established as part of the building of an army barracks in Ballincollig which opened in 1815 and closed on Irish independence in 1920. The Irish army used the barracks, but not the graveyard, from 1939 c.1997.

Ownership of the cemetery is in dispute. It is probably the British Army. However the Irish Office of Public Works, (OPW), 14, Old Blackrock Road, Cork takes care of it and has a key.

Condition of the cemetery is quite good. Some headstone inscriptions are faded.

This was compiled from tombstone inscriptions, sexton records, previous transcriptions, inscriptions made in 1990s by Henchion and Rice, Church of Ireland record books, Carrigrohane, (now at the representative Church Body Library in Dublin), Death Certificates from National records of Ireland, Contacts made informally with army museums and county records in UK, Local papers especially The Constitution.

This is a pretty comprehensive compilation. However, some individuals have appeared since the book was published of which I have no record or at least proof of record. Book: British Military Graveyard, 1810 1922, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, Ireland. Ballincollig Enterprise Board. 2003.

Richard Henchion and Leslie Rice assisted me reading the gravestones, and I did the transcribing and cross checking data. Compiled in 2001/2.

cemetery records

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
