Cemetery History

Holy Rude Churchyard (Holy Rude Kirk) was the original burial ground in what is now known as Stirling's "Top of the Town". It is one of five cemeteries collectively known as, "Old Town Cemeteries". The other four are Valley Cemetery, Mar's Wark (Mar's Place), Drummond Pleasure Ground, and Ladie's Rock. Snowdon Cemetery, which is also adjacent to these five cemeteries, is generally not considered to be part of the Old Town Cemeteries.

Burials at Holy Rude Churchyard have taken place as far back as the 1400s, though there are no standing headstones that date back before the 1700s. There are perhaps as many as 1,300 to 1,500 documented burials. At one point, burials at Holy Rude Churchyard became so overcrowded, bodies were exhumed to make way for new burials.

The Burial Grounds Act of 1855 made it illegal to exhume bodies for newer burials. This led to the creation of Valley Cemetery, located adjacent to Holy Rude Churchyard. Mar's Wark Cemetery, Drummond Pleasure Ground, and Ladie's Rock Cemetery were created soon after.
