Cemetery History

Fresno County Cemeteries #1 and #2 contain the remains of bodies that were not claimed by others. Almost all burials here were processed by the Fresno County Coroner.

Fresno County Cemetery #1 was established in September 1885. Indigents buried by the County elsewhere were removed to this cemetery. Record keeping was originally performed by the sexton at Mountain View Cemetery, however from 1895 to 1909 very few burial had been recorded. It is believed that the sexton during this time failed to record all burials. After 1909, recording appeared to continue as required.

Fresno County Cemetery #2 was established in 1921/1922 after the County realized it would need future burial space. Cemetery #1 was still taking in new burials when Cemetery #2 started. For many years, the sexton at Mountain View Cemetery failed to indicate which cemetery (#1 or #2) a body was buried in. By 1962, Cemetery #1 had completely filled, and was no longer active.

By 1963, the County adopted an ordinance requiring all new indigents buried in Cemetery #2 be cremated, allowing up to 450 bodies being buried in a single grave.

    What makes us Different?

    Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
