Aspen Grove Cemetery is owned and operated by the Aspen Grove Cemetery Association.
History
The Aspen Grove Cemetery Association was incorporated on 3 July 1889, after an effort by city business leaders to start a new cemetery to replace the neglected Evergreen Cemetery (now renamed Ute Cemetery). The Association purchased 15 acres, one-half mile east of town, for $700 in mid-July. The grounds were previously part of the Williams Ranch, located adjacent to land owned by George Vickery, one of the Association's directors.
The first burial to take place there was that of Elizabeth Frey, who died on 16 June 1889 (buried in Block 17, her grave is now unmarked).
By 1906, the Aspen Grove Cemetery Association had become inactive. Cattle had made their way into the cemetery to graze. A fundraising effort in 1908 produced enough money to replace the fence, and from that point, gates to the cemetery remained locked. But by the 1960s, the defunct Cemetery Assocation caused the demise of Aspen Grove Cemetery.
In 1980, with housing developing creeping in on the cemetery grounds, a new Aspen Grove Cemetery Assocation was reincorporated.
In 2007, the city of Aspen and the Colorado Historic Preservation Society jointly funded a study of Aspen Grove, which resulted in the hiring of a contractor to study the cemetery for purposes of recording historical data and gathering research, ultimately to place the cemetery in the National Register of Historic Places.
