History

Final resting place of the victims of the Spirit Lake Massacre, who were killed by men from the Wahpekute band of Indians between March 8-13, 1857. These bodies were reinterred here after the dedication of the monument in 1895.

The cemetery is located on the grounds of the Abbie Gardner Cabin, which is now a state park. The grounds are also home to the Gardner Family Cemetery, where Abbie Gardner Sharp and her family members are buried.
