The Pleasant Valley Cemetery Association was organized in 1880, and their Charter granted by the State of Kansas in March of 1881. John E Divelbiss sold one acre of land for a burial ground to the Association for $15. Divelbiss and his descendents sold additional acres of land, over time, and the cemetery is presently 10.22 acres. In 1964, the Pleasant Valley Cemetery District was formed to provide tax support to this cemetery.
The first recorded burial was Caroline English of Olathe, KS, interred in the winter of 1880, before the cemetery was officially established. The first burial in the established cemetery was Julia A Edgington, wife of R P Edgington, of Morse, KS, on Feb 27, 1881.
This cemetery is kept in very good condition, well maintained, and well visited and attended to by the community. Some of the oldest stones are badly deteriorated due to normal age and weathering.
There are two maps available if anyone is interested in looking at them. Click here for map one and here for map two.
Carol Rollins and I did a complete transcription by reading and photographing the gravestones, completed on Jun 13, 2006.
