History
Spruce Cemetery was organized in 1890 on approx 2 acres of land owned by Nils Erick Nilson. Later on, more of this land needed to be cleared & that was done by Otis Norman. Just recent another parcel of land was donated by Orin & Gladys Messelts to increase to more or less 4-5 acres.
It was first known by the name of the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Clara Church (a large rock with printed marker as the 1st church in Roseau County being built of logs indicates the site of church). The Church is no longer present at the cemetery.
Many of the 1st Swedish Pioneer names can be recognized here, along with other nationalities as well. It is now called the Spruce Cemetery, which holds ownership, is active, still being used for burials, in good condition, & being maintained by perpetual care giving, sale of lots, donations, volunteer work done by families & friends.
Cemetery Records
I did a completed walk thru, readings of all visible headstones & funeral home markers (some grave sites no longer have grave markers but with the sunken ground a grave site is evident). I reviewed burial listing from the Spruce Cemetery. Burial Records from the present caretaker Leroy Falk. Those recorded burials not listed on my records are in brackets ( ) and now may no longer have grave markers indicating a grave site.
This is my completed transcript as of Nov 16, 2009. A digital camera has been used for pictures.
