Cary 1st United Church of Christ Cemetery
Wake County, North Carolina

W. Cornwall Rd. and Pond St.
Cary, NC.

Contributed by Shirley Olson, Feb 16, 2002 [shirley32olson@yahoo.com]. Total records = 80.

Directions: From Interstate 40, west of Raleigh, take Exit # 287, the N. Harrison Ave exit, (SR 1652) and go south about 2 miles to Chatham St. At the traffic light jog left on Chatham St. (SR 1616) and turn right (south) on Academy St., at the next traffic light. About 1/4 mile down the road it will dead end at Cary Elementary School. A sign at the traffic light points left to continue south on Kildaire Farm Rd., (SR 1300) about 1/4 mile to a traffic light at the intersection of W. Cornwall Rd. Turn right and drive a short distance. On the right is the cemetery.

The sign in front of the cemetery proclaims it is the property of Cary 1st United Church of Christ, 1109 Evans Rd., Cary, NC, 27513, Tel. # 467-1053. This is an African American Cemetery.

The cemetery is in a state of disarray, with graves scattered here and there, many unmarked graves and many graves with cast concrete slabs with no names inscribed. Many stones are broken and overturned and general signs of serious neglect are rampant. It is still in use with space for additional burials.

I recommend to anyone interested in this cemetery that they read "Both Sides of the Tracks II, Recollections of Cary, NC, 1860-2000", published in 2001, written by Ella Arrington Williams-Vinson. Many photographs of the cemetery tombstones are included as well as the history of those buried here. It is a very vauable aid to those researching these graves.

Sallie E. Jones is chairman of the Cary Colored Cemetery Committee at the Cary United Church of Christ, 1109 Evans Road, Cary, NC., 27513, and has the task of identifying each grave site. Many of the graves do not have tombstones. Questions may be addressed to her, care of the church. All the asterisks * denote information from the book where the information differs from the tombstones.

What makes us Different?

Single-sourced, not crowd-sourced

Each transcription we publish comes from a single-source, be it the cemetery office, government office, church office, archived document, a tombstone transcriber. Other websites already do an excellent job of crowd-sourcing a single cemetery together. But genealogists also need to see the original records from a single source. That's what we offer.
