Contributed by Marty C. Byzewski, Apr 20, 2005, last edited Jul 13, 2006 [sherlynmeiers@invisimax.com]. Total records = 1,100.
The village is located about 20 miles north of Grand Forks ND. Take the 29 north to Warsaw/Minto Exit and go west on County Road 29 about 2 miles. You will see the beautiful Saint Stanislaus Church on your left and the cemetery lies behind and to the east.
The Settlement of Warsaw had it beginnings when a group of Polish families from Poland, Perham and Winona Minnesota, Pine Creek and other Wisconsin Cities moved to Walsh County and the Warsaw area just before 1880.
The Cemetery is maintained by the church and is divided into three main areas. The majority of the stones are facing 6° North. The first section closest to the Church has the oldest stones of the original settlers. The cemetery is about 98 percent Polish heritage.
It has been rumoured that the earlier wooden crosses were destroyed by fire when someone burnt the grass near the cemetery. Of note there are 5 large metal crosses fabricated in Spillville Iowa by C. Andera. These crosses are predominant in the Czech Cemeteries in Pisek, Veseleyville and other cemeteries in Walsh Co.
I walked and read this cemetery over two days in summer of 2004, using my digital camera. I have transcribed from those photos, which include all existing and legible stones or markers. I am willing to share photos, if anyone wishes to contact me.
