This cemetery is located in Section 19 of Township 33 north Section 18 which makes it about 5 1/2 miles straight north of the now extinct town of Carns.
In the early 1880s a family by the name of Babbitt, residing on a homestead a few miles northwest of Carns, lost an infant son. There was no cemetery near so the child was buried on the Babbitt's land. Other deaths occurred in the neighborhood, so a small plot of ground was fenced for a burying ground.
The cemetery is now on private land and not accessible without permission from the property owner and directions to it, since there is no public road to it. The cemetery has been all but abandoned, with little care for the last 75 years.
Cedar trees from the Niobrara canyons were set out in the cemetery and the name Evergreen was given to the it. On Feb 6, 1887, a Mr. Parrish was buried there, and in 1888 two men, both known to Keya Paha County history, were buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Mr. Shelly and Stephen Leach. The bodies of these two men lie at extreme lengths from one another, Mr. Shelly is in the southwest corner and Mr. Leach in the northeast corner. The two were not on friendly terms, and it was said one of them had expressed a desire not to be buried near the other. There are other graves on this site but the stones are destroyed or unreadable. This includes all existing and legible stones and markers up to the summer of 2006.
