Cemetery History
The present-day Military Cemetery is owned and operated by the Village of Sackets Harbor.
It originally started out as, "Barracks Cemetery", named for Madison Barracks, a military installation that dates back to the War of 1812. The originally barracks cemetery had been located elsewhere, close to the Harbor itself. In 1909, about 300 bodies were removed and relocated to the present-day cemetery. Among the bodies was Brigadier Gen. Zebulon M. Pike, whom Pike's Peak was named after.
In 1947, Madison Barracks closed down. A plan was made to move all bodies to Woodlawn National Cemetery in Elmira. But after local residents led an effort to protest the move, the Village of Sackets Harbor was able to petition the War Assets Administration to to take over ownership.
