This cemetery is located off of Campground Road at the end of Bnai Jacob Lane up the hill from Rt 39 South, about 10 minutes from downtown East Liverpool. There is no sign identifying the cemetery.
The Bnai Jacob Synagogue established this cemetery in 1922 on 5 acres of land purchased from Robert Boyd, which was on the north end of his property. Each member of the B'nai Jacob congregation agreed to purchase lots for $25 a piece. Of the original 35 families who purchased lots, only the family of Joseph Rudolph were interred at B'nai Jacob. The other families had moved away or died elsewhere.
Harry Gordon, a Chester, WV, businessman who was in charge of the cemetery, described the original area as a "wilderness". He said no roads led into that portion of the farm that would become a cemetery. Gordon was devoted to his community, his religion and the role a cemetery plays for families. He wrote, "I know many people do not want to go to a cemetery. I say go up to our cemetery for the pleasure of seeing how beautiful it is, how one can view the beautiful scenery for miles around. We are not of this world forever. When our time comes we need a place for our dear ones, which should look like a park. When people go to a funeral, they should be glad their loved ones have an everlasting nice home."
Various projects were organized by the congregation to obtain additional money to improve the cemetery grounds and to build a road onto the property. Now the cemetery has full-grown shrubs, a blacktopped driveway and fencing. It is well maintained.
I obtained permission about 2 weeks ago to enter, record and take photos of the cemetery. It is surrounded by a 10-foot fence and a locked gate. This is complete up to Jul 15, 2007.
