Romsdal Cemetery

Romsdal Cemetery is located at the southeast corner of the southeast quarter of section 6 of Norway Township. The cemetery can be found adjacent to and northwest of the intersection of Lincoln County's 292nd Street and Lincoln County's 477th Avenue. It is five miles east and five miles north of Beresford, South Dakota; and, it is two miles west and two miles north of Norway Center, South Dakota.

Its north and south sides measures 86.3 yards, and, its west and east sides measures 153 yards. The church grounds occupy the northeast corner of this land area, measuring 52.3 yards on the south side and 58.4 yards on the west side. The remaining land area south and west of the church is used for grave lots.

The church building is a modern looking building. The parking lot is northeast of the church and includes handicap parking.

The grounds of the cemetery are very well maintained. There are no fences, and, the cemetery borders are marked by rows of trees. An additional ten trees are growing inside the cemetery. A large sign stands at the cemetery's southeast corner. Most of the cemetery appears to be full, but, there is space for new burials at the cemetery's west side.

The original cemetery (called Old Romsdal Cemetery) was established three miles north and one mile east of the newer cemetery. In 1890, Lars Kylling offered two acres of land for the construction of a new church, and, he offered fifty dollars towards the church. The church was built later that same year, and, the new Romsdal Cemetery was established next to the church. The Old Romsdal Cemetery was no longer used beyond the 1890's, and, the decision was made to abandon it.

In 1951, the cemetery committee was given full authority over Romsdal Cemetery during the annual congregational meeting. In 1956, the idea of a perpetual care cemetery association was examined. Ed Linde laid the ground work for this, and, perpetual care was set up in 1957. The first meeting of the cemetery assocation was held on January 29, 1957. Money from the sale of grave lots was put towards perpetual care. The board was in charge of filling holes, mowing, and oiling the parking lot.

A number of changes and improvements were made to the cemetery. The old cemetery fence was removed. Older trees were removed, and, newer trees were planted. A row of electric globe lights were installed along the cemetery's east side. By 1976, a vault was required for every burial, and, the church was in charge of parking lot maintenance and was required to take out insurance on the church building and its contents as well as liability for the cemetery.

I visited this cemetery on Sep 11, 18, and 25, and Nov 7 of 2002 for the purpose of transcribing information from the inscriptions on all of the visible grave markers. The transcriptions were compared with earlier burial records, and, any disagreements between the documents were noted and circled on a printout of the 2002 transcriptions. The cemetery was revisited on April 15 and 17 of 2003 for the purpose of verifying the transcribed information, and, a new burial was also noted at that time. Information was gathered from the following sources:

1) 2002 Romsdal Cemetery Survey Notes by Brian Hass. This is a collection of hand-printed survey data and notes collected during the visit to the Romsdal and Old Romsdal Cemeteries in 2002. The data includes all information of genealogical interest obtained from grave marker inscriptions. Special care was taken to insure that all name spellings were transcribed accurately from the markers. This document includes corrections.

2) "Romdal Lutheran Cemetery," page 79 of the Beresford Centennial book, Beresford_100_Years, published 1983 by the "Beresford Republic" and the "Lennox Independent." This contains some historical information on the Old Romsdal and Romsdal cemeteries.

3) "History of Romsdal Cemetery" by Clarice Yttreness, 1989. This history of the cemetery was written for the GFWC of Beresford, SD for the South Dakota state centennial project.
